Online Writing and Art Therapy Group for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder



This would be an eight session online poetry therapy group for eight patients with Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder or Irritable Bowel. There is NO requirement that the patients have any ability in or knowledge of writing or art. All that is required is that they contribute to group discussion, and complete assigned homework assignments. Patients would be screened through an assessment interview prior to starting the group and asked to sign a release to facilitate communication between the therapist and each patientís physician. Each patient would also complete two brief psychometric instruments. The leader for this particular group is a published poet and licensed clinical psychologist with twenty years experience who is a member of the National Association of Poetry Therapists, the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, and the Brain Gut Research Group as well as APA.




Research has shown that cognitive-behavioral therapy is effective in treating a wide range of physical problems. Research has also shown that writing therapy is effective in improving general health and outlook on life, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, heart



problems, functional gastrointestinal disorder, diverticulitis, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and, in general, improves any response to an on-going treatment by a physician




It is estimated that initial startup, patient recruitment and initial screening

would require a minimal time expenditure of 50 hours (@115hr) even

though Metaphor/Metonym for Health does have good visibility in the

medical and writing communities and the general public. $5750

It is estimated that coordination with patients and their physicians and

initial assessment telephone interviews and patients return of forms

and initial assessment instruments would require approximately two

hours per patient (@$115hr): $1340

Treatment time (online group coordination, individual therapeutic

encouragement and editorial response to material submitted, and



coordinate, if required, with individual personal therapists and

physicians) would require 2 hours per patient per week: $14, 720


Closure, recommendations and possibly referral for each patient and their

physician would require approximately 2 hours per patient: $1340
